Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people aged 65 and older, but it also covers certain younger people with disabilities and specific medical conditions.

Medicare is divided into four parts:

  • Part A: Hospital insurance covering inpatient hospital stays, care in nursing facilities, hospice care, and some home health care.
  • Part B: Medical insurance covering certain doctors' services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.
  • Part C (Medicare Advantage): An alternative to Original Medicare that offers additional benefits through private insurance companies.
  • Part D: Prescription drug coverage.

You can enroll in Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period, which begins three months before you turn 65 and ends three months after your birth month.

Original Medicare includes Part A and Part B. Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans are offered by private companies and include all benefits of Parts A and B, often with additional benefits like dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage.
